Phase transitions of cellulose nanocrystal suspensions from nonlinear oscillatory shear

چکیده
Abstract Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) self-assemble in water suspensions into liquid crystalline assemblies. Here, we elucidate the microstructural changes associated with nonlinear deformations (2–9 wt%) CNC through rheological analysis, that was performed parallel coupled rheology—polarized light imaging. We show material parameters from Fourier-transform rheology and stress decomposition are sensitive to all phases investigated, i.e. isotropic, biphasic crystalline. This is contrast steady shear linear viscoelastic dynamic moduli where three-region behavior weak strain overshoot cannot distinguish between phases. Thus, inter-cycle intra-cycle investigated a more approach relate measurements phase behavior.

Structure and transformation of tactoids in cellulose nanocrystal suspensions
Cellulose nanocrystals obtained from natural sources are of great interest for many applications. In water, cellulose nanocrystals form a liquid crystalline phase whose hierarchical structure is retained in solid films after drying. Although tactoids, one of the most primitive components of liquid crystals, are thought to have a significant role in the evolution of this phase, they have evaded ...

متن کاملHeterogeneous flow kinematics of cellulose nanofibril suspensions under shear.
The rheology of NFC suspensions that exhibited different microstructures and colloidal stability, namely TEMPO and enzymatic NFC suspensions, was investigated at the macro and mesoscales using a transparent Couette rheometer combined with optical observations and ultrasonic speckle velocimetry (USV). Both NFC suspensions showed a complex rheology, which was typical of yield stress, non-linear a...
متن کاملShear-Thickening Response of Fumed Silica Suspensions under Steady and Oscillatory Shear
Suspensions of fumed silica in polypropylene glycol exhibit shear-thickening under steady shear and "strain-thickening" under oscillatory shear. Strain-thickening refers to a sharp increase in the complex viscosity eta* observed at critical combinations of strain-amplitude and frequency. Two regimes of strain-thickening behavior have been found: The first occurs at high critical strains and low...
متن کاملChiral Nematic Structure of Cellulose Nanocrystal Suspensions and Films; Polarized Light and Atomic Force Microscopy
Cellulosic liquid crystalline solutions and suspensions form chiral nematic phases that show a rich variety of optical textures in the liquid crystalline state. These ordered structures may be preserved in solid films prepared by evaporation of solvent or suspending medium. Film formation from aqueous suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) was investigated by polarized light microscopy, op...
